According to Miller, “It’s essentially a plug-and-play situation.” Vernon further elaborates, stating, “If you can envision a hot tub, you can easily imagine a fiberglass shell.” The entire installation procedure for these pools typically spans approximately two days from commencement to completion. Miller notes that they also require minimal maintenance due to their composition of a nonporous material known as gelcoat, which effectively prevents algae accumulation. This characteristic translates to reduced chemical usage. Consequently, the affordability and straightforward installation are two key factors driving the preference for fiberglass pools among consumers. However, a notable drawback of selecting a fiberglass pool is its generally smaller size and the constraints associated with its pre-fabricated nature. Vernon clarifies, “They are typically lifted by a crane and placed into a pre-prepared hole.” He adds, “The advantage of all three types of swimming pools is that once filled with water, they all necessitate similar maintenance.” In terms of financial considerations, one can realistically install a quality fiberglass pool for approximately 30 to 50% less than the cost of a concrete pool. Vernon remarks, “This allows you to enjoy beautiful blue water for swimming while remaining within budget.”

2. Vinyl

In the hierarchy of inground pools ranked from least to most expensive, vinyl is positioned as the second option, as noted by Vernon. It is feasible to construct a larger pool using vinyl compared to fiberglass. Regarding the materials utilized, Miller clarifies that “the base rests on a layer of sand while the coping secures the upper edge.” Additionally, vinyl offers greater flexibility, allowing for customization in shape, size, or depth according to individual preferences. Vernon further explains that “the vinyl lining is what ensures waterproofing.” Miller points out that many individuals opt for vinyl due to its lower initial cost relative to the other two types, although it may incur higher repair expenses over time.

3. Concrete

Both experts agree that concrete pools are the most popular choice among inground pool types. From a design perspective, concrete pools offer unparalleled flexibility. "There are no limitations," states Vernon. With concrete, one can construct pools of any size and design. Miller notes that the largest pools globally are constructed from concrete. Structurally, concrete pools are reinforced with steel rods, and a plaster finish can be applied to enhance their durability. Miller adds, "Due to the porous nature of concrete, the plaster-coated surface retains water more effectively, providing superior stability." The final appearance is akin to a smooth plaster finish, similar to the interior walls of residences. "When considering luxurious, high-end pools, concrete is the material of choice," remarks Vernon. While they are certainly the most costly option, they also offer the greatest longevity.

Finishes

Miller states that although the installation of concrete pools may require more time, individuals prefer them due to their long-lasting nature and sophisticated appearance. Vernon notes that tile is a favored finish among pool owners. "In my view, it provides the most luxurious and upscale aesthetic for an inground pool," he remarks. Additionally, one may consider an aggregant finish, which involves incorporating small stones and pebbles into the plaster applied over the concrete. Aggregant finishes can be customized in various colors, including black, brown, blue, or any hue corresponding to the selected pebbles.
